METAL GEAR SOLID RISING Discussion (with myself mostly and a friend ;)

(this is a long winded e-mail I sent to a good friend on Myspace, just me discussing my opinions on the METAL GEAR SOLID SERIES and where it stands. It's pretty long and i thought it was too good to pass up. its kinda like first hand what we gamers like to discuss when a new game is coming)

Yahtzees back at the job after his little vacation, it turns out he was playing peace walker, and he wrote an extra punctuation article about Hideo Kojima and his views on women. I thought it was funny when he was saying how the boss was in the war and pregnant, and had performed a suzerain on herself, hence she had a snake like scar, to which Yahtzee says "apparently she wasn't sure where the fetus was" XD LOl

Anyway, it got me thinking about Metal Gear solid Rising, i was watching the e3 trailer again, someone put a comment that the metal gear games that Kojima didn't over see didn't do as well or weren't as good, like Metal gear Snakes Revenge was developed by different people, and isn't considered the true MG2, the one with Snake in a bright orange jump suit ;) and I think they were referring to some of the GBA and the acid series, which I'm not sure how much directorial control Kojima had over those games.

It sorta got me thinking, one of the things I thought was cool about Grey Fox in the original MGS was the fact you didn't see him so often, only his Boss fight, the bit at the beginning with Ocelot, and the bit at the end where he jumps in to save the day. Really, there's not a whole lot to Grey Fox,

he's basically a resurrected soldier gone mad, or like a Frankenstein monster bent on revenge, when really all he wants is to replay his fight with Snake, not to win but just to fight, cos I guess thats how he remembered he died. But anyway, what makes him cool is the situation, because the whole nuclear strike thing Snake has to deal with through out the game is the main focus, and grey fox randomly jumps in and out of the story. What i think makes him cool is you only see him a little bit, so your left wondering what he was up to while you were busy going through the facility, or i guess from his random assistance during the codec sort of keeping a watchful eye on you, making sure you didn't die by stepping on a claymore, thus denying him his revenge. It is nice its never confirmed either way, so your left to decide for yourself. Thats one of the reasons you see so much fan fiction about this character and lots of fan art, is that people want to see more of this badass character, so they fill in the void with their own material.

I thought it would be cool to play as the ninja, and sure enough I sorta got that in the Special Missions cd, I pretty much only got it to play that chapter, which you get after getting to about 75-85% completion I think. A lot of the rest of the game is just training, and some Cluedo like murder mysteries, which were nice and inventive considering the limitations of the PS1 hardware, but forgettable.

Pretty much all you do is test drive the ninja exoskeleton, but it was fun, you can flip, turn stealth, sneak up and cut peoples throats Tenchu style and i think you can put the sword away and do his own boxing combo style.
Once your done with that there really isn't anything else to hold your attention, no connection to what he was doing in the story, he was just in some big warehouse with guards.

Now, since they wrapped up solid Snake's story and are looking to start a new franchise with Raiden as the main character, with a new mechanic and presumably a different take on how to play, i guess well get what i was hoping for with Grey foxes extra missions which was more playing as him and having it connect to the story. I did quite like how Raiden was changed to the cyborg ninja Du Jour for MGS4, i don't think it could have been anymore appropriate, and his whole Rivalry with vamp was really great. i think I read some one comment on youtube that this game is probably a prequel and is all about how Raiden Perfected his cyborg suit leading up to the events of MGS 4.

Which I guess is a good a way to do it as I can expect. I still think Raidens whole recovery from his cybernetics at the end of MGS4 needs a bit more explanation, apparently removing your limbs and replacing them with machine parts isn't a big a deal as it used to be.

But Anyway, the point I am getting at and why I brought up the whole grey fox thing, was that Raiden like Grey fox in MGS only appears hear and there to do something awesome then leaves.

So what made grey fox cool was you were waiting a long time for him to show up again, so what made him cool was the situation. So I think in Raiden's case, taking the cyborg ninja, that one element in the background and using it to prop up an entire game and expecting it to do as well isn't very realistic.

I think if they are starting a new franchise, or going in a new direction with Raiden, I think they need to introduce lots of new characters, and the sword slicing mechanic is very cool, but that shouldn't be the only thing new they bring to the table. Also I looked at the credits and Yoji Shinkowa did the concept artwork,

HOLY SHIT O.O thats great that he has consistently done the art for all of the core cannon entries in the MGS games. i am Very fond of Ashley woods style they have whole heartily embraced for the portable Ops and Peace Walker series of spin offs, his style is very similar to Shinkowa's, but different in its own cool way :)

And I notice that Kojima isn't directing Rising, he is the executive producer. So at least he has a prominent role in the say in what happens, but like I say, expecting it to live up to the originality of the previous core MGS might be a little far off. I'd still definitely play it for the sword slicing mechanic.

Nows probably the best time to get a PS3 as its price point is as low as it's going to get, even bundling the move and newer games in wouldn't raise it up much more either, but anyway, thats what i'll do,

just wait it out till its super reasonable and all the games i want price wise have been slashed, or maybe one of the later models of Ps3 like the slim lines or redesigned models.

Anyway, we also got MGS 3 on the 3Ds, which i guess will be a straight port, sort of , maybe rebuilding the game, just replicating the visuals and having stuff pop out in the foreground,

and incorporate some stylus stuff in there too, may as well see what GT make of it, its probably there to convince people who are on the fence about upgrading to the new software, just one of those opening games publishers try to convince you to hand over your money during its highest price point.

Anyway Bob, hope you have a great time in New York!

Regards,

Alex,

let me know when your next free and well complete God of war 3, BTW I SAW THE PICTURES FOR ARKHAM CITY, HOly Shit, Good Stuff!! :O

Two face looks great, a bit like the live action version in Dark knight where half his face is destroyed, although in the game it seems to extend all the way down to his arm, which I'm not sure about. I like Harley Quins new outfit, its closer to the animated look, and Catwoman looks a lot like her most recent look in the comics which is fine. Maybe they will have a co op mode where you can play as them both I wonder :O hmm, I wonder if they will have knight wing in it.
It looks like two face will be the main villain, I guess, will be cool to have black mask in it too :)
But anyway, we may get to see early gameplay soon or a new trailer! :D :D :D
